6 Travel Packing Tips That Will Make Your LIfe Easier written by: TitusM Packing is the unavoidable ritual that comes before you travel. It’s not always fun but it is important. In fact, the way you pack can affect your travel plansin a lot of ways, like not being able to carry-on your luggage, not having enough room for souvenirs, an aching back due to your over-packed bag, and so forth. For these reasons, it is important to pack smart, and you can do that thanks to the following tips.
1. Pack as light as possible
The last thing you want on your trip is to wish you had carried less. Chances are that you can do with less that you think you need. For starters, take a smaller bag than you think you need. That way, you automatically have to pack small. If planning to fly, a small bag will allow you to carry it on board. Generally, pack clothes that can be worn regularly. Also pack clothes that can be worn for multiple purposes, e.g. shorts, pants, jeans, t-shirts, tank tops, etc. Also carry clothes with neutral colors as these can go with anything.
2. Avoid bulky items
This should be an obvious one. Avoid items that will drain your space. Good examples here include jackets, trench coats, thick pullovers and shoes. These really take up a lot of space. If possible, pack none of the above. If you have have to them with you, try to wear the heaviest stuff so that your bag remains light. For shoes, try to stick to the pair you’re wearing.
3. Pack the larger items first
When you start putting items into your back, start with the larger ones. As you pack, fit the smaller items like scarves and socks into the spaces created by the larger clothes. Do this as you pack until your bag is full, or until you’re done packing.
4. Roll your clothes instead of folding
If your items can’t fit into the bag, try rolling the clothes as opposed to folding them. For some reason, rolling takes up less space than folding. It’s also much faster to do, so your packing consumes less time. Simply lay your clothes on the bed or floor, fold them in half and roll them like a towel. This method also reduces creasing.
5. Keep the important stuff near
You may need some items during your journey. Instead of having to toss out your entire bag looking for them, put the stuff you’re likely to need near the top, or in a compartment where you can reach them easily. This includes items such as keys, maps, medicine, chargers, etc
6. Empty utilities into smaller containers
For utilities, empty only what you need into smaller containers as opposed to carrying the entire bottle. This applies for items such as toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, etc. Doing so will also qualify you to carry your luggage onboard a plane as opposed to checking it in, if you do not wish to do so.
Whether you’re backpacking across the country, flying on business or going on a vacation, these tips will come in handy. Not only that, they will make your travel that much convenient as you haul your bags from one point to another.
